Wine Buy The Case > New Zealand  > Wither Hills

Father and son, John and Brent Marris have been at the forefront of Kiwi winemaking from the word go. Back in the 1970s John was one of the first farmers to plant vines in Marlborough and a bit later on Brent became one of the first New Zealanders to graduate from Adelaide’s Roseworthy College – where coincidentally, he was a roommate of d’Arenberg’s Chester Osborn! Returning to Marlborough, Brent founded Wither Hills using his father’s fruit and quickly built a formidable reputation for his wines. Today Wither Hills are regarded as benchmark producers for Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and it is to Brett’s enormous credit that he resists the temptation to introduce a ‘reserve’ range, preferring to concentrate on just making the best possible wine he can every year.

This vibrant, classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc presents a brilliant lemon-lime colour. Distinctive herbaceous and gooseberry aromas support a wonderfully balanced palate, presenting ripe fruit, coupled with a lingering harmonious finish. The seamlessness of this wine is driven by exceptional flavours, providing elegance rarely seen in this variety. Colour Brilliant lemon-lime Aroma Vibrant, bright, fresh, herbal, gooseberry – classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Palate Both fresh and refreshing, the mouth-filling fruit characters – passionfruit and gooseberry enhance the structure of fresh acidity. Beautifully ripe and powerful wine with an impressively long finish.

"This is one of only four wines that have made the Top 250 of my bestselling guide, The Wine List, every year since the inaugural edition back in 2001. And do you know what? Every year it gets better, and the price is still a remarkable £7.99. Bursting with vivacious citrus fruit and parading an incredible palate and stunning length, this sauvignon is one of the finest-value white wines on the planet.

Wither Hills Pinot Noir 2005 Wither Hills Pinot Noir 2005

Two new blocks came into production this year on completely different soil types. The Taylor River block is on stones, silt and a mixture of clay. This has produced lovely small berries, intensely coloured wine with beautiful broad deep plum flavours. While the Benmorven block is 100% clay. This block produced fruit of extremely dense colour, high rich flavour intensity with a wickedly low PH resulting in a more structured wine with incredible depth. Fermentation of the Pinot Noir in our new “state-of-the-art” Pinot tanks and pressing in our traditional basket press has resulted in probably the best Pinot Noir yet made by Wither Hills.

The flavours are very sweet and lingering. Look for raspberry, plum and Campari - like fruit and spice. Beautiful youthful tannins ensure the ageability of this wine will reward those with patience, consistent with premium Pinot Noir.
