Laughing Magpie Collection
This is one of the newest offerings from the dArenberg team, and one that we are immensely proud of. Chester's daughters Ruby and Alicia take the naming rights for The Laughing Magpie; it is what they call their tame Kookaburra, a member of the Kingfisher family (though not at all similar in looks) that lives in the native scrub surrounding the Osborn family home.
The young Osborn girls found it far easier to say Laughing Magpie than Kookaburra. The characteristic call of the Kookaburra is a loud and startlingly human- sounding laugh.
We thought that calling the wine after the Magpie, a large and melodious black and white Australian native bird (which looks not dissimilar to the European magpie) was a great way to highlight the blend of black (Shiraz) and white (Viognier) varieties which combine to make this wine.
d'Arenberg The Laughing Magpie Shiraz/Viognier 2005
Upon release, the "Laughing Magpie" has a vivid, dark purple colour. The Viognier adds fragrant flower and perfume aromas, and flavours of nectarines, apricots, ginger and herbs, serving to enhance the very ripe flavour spectrum of the Shiraz, which primarily exhibits blackberry, blueberry and boysenberry. With a considerable portion of this wine being naturally fermented (no yeast added), the wine reveals exotic aromas of roast meat, salami, game, earth and lipstick. These characters prevail on the palate with a smooth glycerol impact following through to the mid-palate, with the exotic characters growing and combining with tannins and a long complex finish. Structurally, the 2003 "Laughing Magpie" is as full-bodied as the 2002 release with a more complex, rich mouth feel, ending with a beautifully balanced array of fine, rich tannins. The ageability of this wine, we think, is very long due to the massive fragrant fruit, the lively intense flavours and the abundance of white wine tannins in the late spectrum.

d'Arenberg The Laughing Magpie Shiraz/Viognier 2002
The 2002 The Laughing Magpie Shiraz/Viognier (93% of the former and 7% of the latter) is the La Mouline of McLaren Vale. An exotic, heady, flamboyantly-styled red, it boasts an inky/purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of lychee nuts, acacia flowers, blackberries, and creme de cassis. Supple-textured and opulent, with pepper, licorice, and blackberry liqueur-like flavors, this beautiful wine is made in a modern, progressive style with terrific fruit intensity along with notions of sweet French oak in the background. It should drink well for 10-12 years.

D'Arenberg continues to do exceptionally well with their newest offering, The Laughing Magpie. The inky/purple-colored 2001 (a blend of 95% Shiraz and 5% Viognier) exhibits knock-out aromas of violets, blackberry liqueur, honeysuckle, and toasty new French oak. With extraordinary richness, full body, opulence, intensity, and a seamless as well as majestic finish this killer red will be at its finest between 2005-2018
