Kleine Zalze Estate This historic estate was first planted in 1683 by Nicolaas Cleef, a German settler who came from the town of Grosse Salze - from which the name Kleine Zalze derives. In 1996 it was purchased by Jan Malan and Kobus Basson, who have put massive investment into a new winery and extension of the vineyards. There are 260 hectares planted, plus 30 around the winery at Stellenbosch. Most recently they have been able to purchase some 40 hectares of established vineyards, close to the winery which belonged to the neighbouring Spier Estate. As well as providing further quantities of first class fruit. it has effectively recreated the holding of the original De Zalze estate over 300 years ago. Kobus has also built a formidable team including the recently arrived Johan Joubert, the Senior Winemaker; Johan is regarded as one of South Africa's top young winemakers and has already won several major trophies for his wines both domestically and internationally. The pace of expansion and change at this winery is almost breathtaking!
