Gran Clos
Make way for two fantastic Priorats from Gran Clos, a new estate to us, but one that is long established and previously known as Cellers Fuentes. It is one of the rising stars in the region getting big scores and winning awards wherever the wines turn up and we are very excited to be re-launching it in the UK.
Made from century old vines by local boy done good, José Angel Maestre Besó, the wines are classic Priorat: intense, full-bodied and concentrated with that stony minerality that reminds you of the area's crazy mountainous terroir, as if hewn right out of the ground.
While tasting fantastic now, the wines will also age well. In a recent revisiting of Priorat's 1995 vintage, Gran Clos came out on top, no mean feat as the line-up included all the high priced heavy hitters from the region like Clos d'Erasmus, L'Ermita and Finca Dofi.

Gran Clos - Finca El Puig 2002
Named after the Catalan for mountain, this is a blend of old vine Grenache, Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon with dashes of Merlot and Syrah, it is fresh and floral with licquorice, plum and raspberry notes mixed with cocoa and wild herbs; a downright elegant Priorat. The 2001 chalked up 91 points from Parker and we reckon this one is even better. Great drinking now.
Vineyards & Winemaking
Aged 1216 months in oak barrels (85% French, 15% American)
Grapes
45% Garnacha, 23% Cariñena, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 2% Syrah.
Picked September 8 to November 2, 2002.
Tasting Notes
Deep, almost opaque, precious red color. Fresh aroma of flowers, fresh fruit and balsamic notes. Expressive mouth full of ripe prunes, strawberries and citrus. Well balanced with delicate tannins and well integrated wood. Hints of liquorice, wild herbs and minerals. Persistent, aromatic finish.

Gran Clos 2001
The domaine's flagship wine is simply stunning and produced in tiny quantities. A blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Carignan and 10% Cabernet, it is powerful, mouth-coating and rich. "An inky/purple colour accompanies sweet aromas of blueberries, blackberries, crushed stones and flowers. It possesses a velvety texture, a juicy mid-palate, and a long, concentrated finish. Give it 2-3 years of cellering and enjoy it over the following 12 to 15". 93 points, Robert Parker, April 2004. Only a small parcel available, to be followed by the 2002 vintage arriving in the Summer.
Vineyards & Winemaking
Temperature-controlled malolactic fermentation. Aged 15 months in French oak barrels (100% new).
Grapes
52% Garnacha, 38% Cariñena, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Picked September 8th to November 2nd 2002.

Round, complex fruit flavors of blackberry and plum, with a long, fresh finish.
