Wine Buy The Case > South Africa > Goats Do Roam

There’s no stopping Fairview owner/vintner Charles Back when his interest in a creative, entrepreneurial project is piqued. It all started in 1995 with a suggestion by a wine buyer for Western Wines, a UK-based distribution company which was soon to establish a branch in the Cape winelands and float the wildly successful Kumala range, the third single-biggest wine brand in the UK. The man mooted the vinification of a Rhône-style blend but with a Cape flavour: ‘a nice, friendly wine that would do well in large quantities…’ Back, already known for his panache with shiraz and always looking for new styles of wine to woo adventurous and discerning consumers, took the ball and ran with it.

Thus was born, in 1999, what was for the South African wine scene an innovative blend using Rhône varieties such as shiraz, cinsaut, carignan and mourvèdre with a dash of local pinotage, which Back had sourced from various vineyards (his own and others) around Paarl and Malmesbury. But, despite the humour of the packaging, the content of the bottle impressed with its quality, combining rich complexity with great drinkability.

Goats Do Roam Goat Door 2006 12x75cl Goats Do Roam Goat Door 2006 12x75cl

As our goats roamed through the vineyards choosing the fruit for our well known Goats do Roam range of wines, one obstinate member of the flock decided to go his own way. He sought out his very own vineyards and, being a lover of rich, barrel fermented white wine, chose the noble Chardonnay grape. So delighted was he with the results that he now fiercely protects these vineyards by standing guard at the door! We have, of course, named him Chevre Chardonnay, and these vineyards produce exceptional quality wine, vintage after vintage.
