Wine Buy The Case > Australia > d'Arenberg > The d'Arenberg Collection > The Dead Arm Collection

The Dead Arm Shiraz is one of our ‘flagship’ wines at d’Arenberg the very best Shiraz from one of the oldest producers in arguably the best Shiraz producing region in Australia, McLaren Vale.

The Dead Arm gets its name in a fairly inauspicious way – it is named after the disease (Eutypa Lata) which afflicts some of the oldest vines at d’Arenberg from which we get the majority of fruit destined for The Dead Arm. The disease, Eutypa Lata, or ‘Dead Arm’ is common all around the world in old vineyard sites.

The disease in effect slowly reduces one of the ‘arms’ of the vines to dead wood, which then means the other arm of the vine produces small volumes of the most incredibly concentrated and highly flavoured grapes.

This makes ideal material to go into this, our top Shiraz. The grapes are processed as are all of d’Arenberg reds, using the gentle Demoisy rubber toothed, open-mouthed crusher, and fermented in wax-lined, headed down open fermenters which are foot trod (and being ever hygiene-conscious here at d’Arenberg, the feet are clad in waders!) and temperature controlled.

The still fermenting grapes are pressed off in baskets through the old ‘Coq’ and ‘Bromley & Tregoning’ presses into mainly new American and French oak barriques for 22 months or thereabouts, before blending and bottling at d’Arenberg.

The Dead Arm is a spectacular example of McLaren Vale Shiraz – concentrated, multi-dimensional with huge fruit, length and texture, immense balance and ageing potential.

And the comment from Robert M. Parker who writes for the American publication The Wine Advocate is worth mentioning. Writing of d'Arenberg's Dead Arm he described it as;

"outrageously rich, spectacular stuff, the likes of which only Aussies seem capable of making."

‘One of this estate’s flagship wines, the 2003 The Dead Arm Shiraz appears to be better than the 2002. A deeper, richer, fuller-bodied offering that spent time in equal parts French and American oak, it possesses an opaque purple colour, great intensity, and a fabulously sweet nose of blackberries, cassis, asphalt, earth, and oak. Powerful, super-concentrated, and obviously fashioned from low yields and old vines, this is classic McLaren Vale old vine Shiraz that should age nicely for 15+ years.’ 95 points RP

The 2002 The Dead Arm Shiraz was a challenge to effectively analyze. After the magnificent 2001, it comes across as lighter-styled, more elegant, but also closed and restrained. Several hours of aeration were beneficial, but this cuvee seems to be playing it close to the vest. However, there is power beneath the tannic structure.
It has noble breeding, but appears to be totally shut down at present.

Anticipated maturity: 2009 - 2020." 92+ points RP

Dead Arm Shiraz 2000 Dead Arm Shiraz 2000

This estate’s most renowned offering is their old vine (90+ years) Shiraz called The Dead Arm. The unfined/unfiltered 2000 The Dead Arm Shiraz is one of South Australia’s finest wines of the vintage. A perfume of grilled steak intermixed with blackberries, new saddle leather, earth, pepper and melted licorice rises from this
awesome red. With great power, richness, and no hard edges, it is still young and primary, but should hit its peak in 3-7 years, and last for two decades or more.

Dead Arm Shiraz 1999 Dead Arm Shiraz 1999

The unfined/unfiltered 1999 The Dead Arm Shiraz (2,000 cases) was aged in 100% new oak, of which 70% was American and 30% French. It is about as natural and unmanipulated a product of the vineyard as one can find. Fullbodied and awesomely rich, notes of black pepper, licorice, and blackberry as well as cherry liqueur cascade over the palate with enormous concentration and intensity, high tannin, and a structured, muscular style. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring, and consume it over the following 2-3 ecades. It is a timeless museum piece made in a style that can only be produced in Barossa or McLaren Vale.

Dead Arm Shiraz 1998 Dead Arm Shiraz 1998

The 1998 The Dead Arm Shiraz (from a vineyard planted prior to 1890) is outrageously rich, spectacular stuff, the likes of which only Australia seems capable of making. Whiners may complain that it is too big, too rich, too flavorful, and too damn good, but this opaque purple-colored offering is loaded with blackberry liqueur, smoke, charcoal, pepper, cassis, and licorice. Unctuously-textured and full-bodied, but neither heavy nor overbearing, the wine's sweet tannin and low acidity are hidden in the cascade of fruit and glycerin that melt on the palate. This riveting, compelling effort can be drunk now, but promises to age well for two decades or more.

Dead Arm Shiraz 1996 Dead Arm Shiraz 1996

“Year in and year out d'Arenberg's finest cuvee is their spectacular Shiraz made from 100+ year old, head-pruned vines. It is an exquisite, multi-dimensional wine that is sure to make a formidable impression with readers. It is aged in 100% new oak, tipping the scales at a whopping 14.9% alcohol, yet has a glorious level of fruit and extract. The full-bodied, port-like 1996 Dead Arm Shiraz displays scents of black fruits, prunes, licorice, and pepper. Thick, rich, and unctuously-textured, this is a dazzling old vine Shiraz that can be drunk now, or cellared for 15-20 years.” RP 96 points

Dead Arm Shiraz 1995 Dead Arm Shiraz 1995

“The red wines are all exuberantly fruity, cleanly made rich wines. Among the more limited edition offerings are several wines that represent some of d'Arenberg's finest parcels, all of which are basket-pressed. The Dead-Arm Shiraz is an old vine Shiraz cuvee that is fermented in oak barrels and raised in mostly new American oak. It is a sexy, flashy, flamboyant Shiraz that is short on restraint, but big on screaming fruit. The 1995 Dead-Arm Shiraz exhibits an opaque purple color, as well as a fabulous nose of ripe, late harvest-like, plummy, blackberry fruit, and cassis. Viscous, thick, and rich, with layers of flavor, low acidity, and sexy new oak, this lusty-styled Shiraz should drink well for at least a decade.” RP 91 points
