De Trafford
Quietly spoken David Trafford is an architect and self-taught winemaker who is determined that his wines have a sense of place, including the warm sunny climate and rich clay soils in his calculations. After all, as David says, Stellenbosch is not the shagged out alluvial plains of the Medoc with their miserable climate. The wines reflect this; they have rich fruit and a juicy ripeness but they are crisply pressed and structured too. His ability to blend New World innovation and Old World methodology can perhaps be best seen in his sweet Straw Wine, which has quickly become one of the Cape's most fiercely sought after wines.

De Trafford Chenin Blanc 2006
An appealing pale yellow colour. The nose shows nutty, creamy oak hiding the rich apricot and honey fruit and a complex mineral character. The palate is rich and full bodied. Oak dominating shortly after bottling, should soon evolve to highlight the rich fruit and long aftertaste. Probably best between 2005 and 2009. Excellent with sushi, rich fish and seafood dishes, most white meats or on its own.
Price:
£12.87
(Including: VAT at 17.5%)
Quantity:
De Trafford Petit Verdot Merlot 2005
This is a "once off" unique production and is not part of the normal De Trafford range.
The rich, concentrated but rather one dimensional Petit Verdot was blended with Merlot that was more complete and elegant with a little herbaceousness that compliments the pepperiness of the Petit Verdot.
Probably best between 2008 and 2013, but difficult to predict as there is no track record for this wine. Ideal with any red meat and sausages on a braai (barbeque).
Price:
£13.35
(Including: VAT at 17.5%)
Quantity:
De Trafford Merlot 2003

£14.28

De Trafford Elevation 393 - 2003
Impressive deep red / purple colour. Lush blackberry and spicy fruitcake aromas. Dense tannins and intense fruit provide a rich, supple, almost thick texture. Needs time to show hidden complexity. Long finish. Probably best between 2006 and 2015. Ideal with rich, roasted or grilled red meat dishes.

De Trafford Roobernet Cabernet Sauvignon 2001
Deep, dark, brooding red colour. Rich, dark bramble berry nose with smoky nutty overlay.
Intense dark fruit on palate gives way to big, chewy tannins and a long dry finish. A monster wine with great ageing potential - probably best between 2008 - 2015.
Enjoy with rich meat dishes. - especially a fat, juicy piece of rump steak grilled on the traditional braai.

De Trafford Straw Wine 2004 37.5cl
Attractive yellow gold colour. Complex marzipan, burnt honey and dusty dried apricot nose.
The palate is sweet and concentrated (though less than usual) with nice acidity and oak tannins to compliment and deliver a long, lingering finish.
This rather more food friendly than the last few vintages. Delicious with biscotti, various cheeses and nuts. Compliments slightly tart fruit desserts and good patés beautifully.
